Stupid stock photoI’m finally breaking down and going to our crappy third-party vendor’s support site for some help. And what a crappy website they have, even though they touted its revamping just a few months ago.

First, and foremost, of course, they’ve got stock photos. Right there, I have zero confidence that they’ll be able to help.

Let’s have a caption contest, with answers more original than, “Ooh, look at the porn!” (Ok, so the thought that the old lady is pointing and laughing and any generic porn is still pretty funny).

(Stock photos on websites #1)

UPDATE: The vendor solved my problem in about ten minutes. I’m shocked.

Shift Happens

12:33 pm

Just sharing. Goes along with the whole The World Is Flat notion. I don’t care if it’s “socialist propoganda” as one commenter put it. The assertions made sound about right to me. It does seem to me that the economic divide in the U.S. will continue to grow irreparably wide unless we do take a sharp turn left. But I don’t see that happening. Oh, right, I said I was just sharing, didn’t plan to comment…

UPDATE (5/31/07) – Six Apart CEO wrote a pretty sincere mea culpa on the main LiveJournal website today, which makes my original rant pretty moot, so I’ll stick a “more” tag around it…

Michael Vick loves watching Buster and Scooby rip each other apart

I touched on this briefly last week, and I don’t want to say much more, because what Michael Vick and others do to dogs and how others think their behavior is acceptable and amusing just sickens me. But I heard some more about this story today, and I don’t think my earlier name-calling went far enough. Michael Vick isn’t just a thug; he’s a monster.

Video game icon Michael VickSay what you will about Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds abusing their bodies and cheating their way to records and perhaps influencing a few kids here or there to put performance-enhancing crap in their bodies. Or consider how one in a million of violent video game addicts might shoot up his school. Then think about how much of role model someone like Michael Vick is, and how the media and general public care little when someone of his stature participates in high stakes dog-fighting and contributes to the abuse of hundreds of dogs in the name of entertainment. Do some quick Psych 101 reading if you’re not familiar with just how likely it is that kids that either participate in or are amused by the abuse of animals will go on to later abuse and injure human beings without remorse.

I don’t give a crap what legal stage this situation is at. I don’t think many people get framed for participating in dog fighting rings and abusing and neglecting dozens of their pets.

I imagine I may suddenly get all these hits from rabid sports fans ready to defend Vick. Good luck getting past the math question you’ll need to answer correctly to post a comment.

iTunes is my friend

11:19 am ,

I hadn’t been speaking to iTunes in awhile. I had ignored it for months before I got my new PC at work, and I basically ignored it until today. And then I realized that my new PC probably wouldn’t have the same mysterious sharing problem that my old one did when it came to my iTunes library. So now I can share my stuff at work. The good part of this is that people get to listen to the music that I have. The bad part is that people get to listen to the music that I have. For better or for worse, I haven’t limited the library to just Toastie Radio material. So if I have some ZZ Top for some inexplicable reason, it’s there. Maybe I’ll edit the work playlist at some point. I don’t want to be known as the guy who as seven albums worth of stuff from _____ _____, even if I can honestly claim that I don’t like 80% of it. (So you still like 20% of it???)

Anyway, refriending is a step on the way to actually using my much-underutilized iPod. And it’s a way to finally catch up on Real Time with Bill Maher since I stopped getting HBO after my three free months.

I think Al Gore may be the most qualified and potentially effective person who is not running for President. Unfortunately, tens of millions of Americans still think that there is a “debate” about climate change and dismiss Gore’s sincere work on the planet’s behalf as pomp.

Yahoo! Answers has a question from Speaker Nancy Pelosi. I won’t provide the link, because I don’t want anyone to waste their time providing a thoughtful answer. The creationist, science-dismissing nuts are running away with this question, as far as rating all the moronic answers high and the common-sense answers low. I’ll include the Yahoo userids so the the morons can potentially lose employment opportunities when they are googled after using their Yahoo email addresses in resumes. Those with rational opinions who lose potential employment opportunities over your comments, youdon’t want to work for anyone who thinks that the cause of global warming is up for debate.

Some “low”-rated answers (nearly as many thumbs-down as thumbs-up):

nas8caror300 – car manufactures MANDATED to produce cars that get at least 40 mpg within the next 5 years instead of by the year 2020..improve the traffic flow in major cities..or a truck only belt around major cities ..like around Chicago (258 – 255)
Chris S – 1) Increase taxes on companies that use new timber (either from the US or imported) in their products when alternative recycled resources are available…2) Stop urban sprawl….3) Resurrect the legislation that was meant to increase fuel efficiency on cars… (375 – 345)

Some “high”-rated answers (many more thumbs-up):

Noone N – I would like to see congress stop trying to regulate my life. What ever they do it will: 1) Cost me and other taxpayers much more than it should 2) Create more problems than it solves 3) Result in loss of liberty and freedom (738-365)
Slim Whitman – It is not a crisis as “they” (Al Gore and his ilk) want you to believe. The earth is self healing an climate change is cyclical. For crying outloud!! People, quit Drinking the ecomarxist koolaid before you sell our Country out to UN bureaucrats!!! The current ecomarxists, yourself included are attempting to create an environment of fear for one reason, Control. (761 – 541)
Raimon – Sound and objective scientific analysis by environmental engineers and climatologists, not pseudoscience by “experts” such as Al Gore. (513 – 115)
mount_zion_crusader – I would first like to see it established that global warming is a bad thing, that we can even affect it, that it is even happening. (314 – 130)

And some very-low rated answers from people with the gall to suggest such ideas as:

Juleette – [greater effort to recycle] (102-151)
    – Given that the US is the biggest contributor to pollution and global warming and that automobiles are a large fraction of that… [might as well stop there you communist America-hater] (79 – 243)

Or maybe all this is meaningless except to point out that Yahoo! Answers is NOT the place to turn if you need a serious answer to a serious question.

YouTube is great. So if you’ve never seen Match Game, here are Charles Nelson Reilly, Brett Somers, and Betty White talking about it recently:

Charles Nelson Reilly on Match GameI am saddened to hear the news that Charles Nelson Reilly has passed away at age 76. I watch an hour of DVR’ed Match Game everyday. I have been meaning to see his recent documentary film The Life of Reilly.

UPDATE
Thanks to Blazer Manpurse for sharing the link to this video, showing Chuck as I’d never seen him before–not just gay, but gay and yellow…

I bought my Crockpot® back in November. I’ve only used it three times and not since February. I’ve only cooked slightly more times. I’m taking a stab at cooking again today. It’s an ad-hoc recipe. I’m not following any predefined recipe for a couple of reasons. The main reason is that I don’t feel like buying any ingredients that I don’t already have at home. The second reason is that I think I can improvise and wind up with something that’s edible and even pretty good. All of my previous Crockpot attempts were bastardized versions of some recipe, and they came out alright. Today’s effort was inspired by a recipe, but I essentially replaced each ingredient with one that I actually had on hand.

Yes, it’s a quite an exciting Memorial Day weekend here in Durham. I’ll keep this post updated, including a list of the ingredients after I figure out how many teaspoons are in 1/8 cup. (Yeah, Google can probably do this pretty quickly).

At the very end of Howard Fineman’s Newsweek piece, Independents Run Hard But Stay Out, there’s mention of a hypothetical Gore-Obama ticket.

Gore-Obama is a very big ticket, probably unbeatable.
- Former Senator Bob Kerrey
