Eye strain fixes

Thanks to , I think some of the eye strain and generally head-cloudiness I’ve been having at work may lessen. She suggested I up the refresh rate on my monitor. I never realized what an effect that could have. I googled “refresh rate” and found a webpage with some other general PC tips that enlightened me.

So I’ve done three things so far:
1. Increased refresh rate on monitor from 60 Hz to 75.
2. Turned on ClearType effect, which I’d never heard of before; the result is a crisper apperance for text in most apps, which seems to be easier on the eyes
3. Changed background for text areas from white to off-white; I used to mess with Windows color settings all the time but hadn’t done so at this job yet; this makes a big different

Oh, so something else you should do if you aren’t already is correctly adjust where your monitor is for your eyes.

Make sure the center or just above center of your screen is at direct eye level. Anything different is a LOT of neck and spinal strain, and I’ve learned the very hard way that headaches and eye strain come right from those.

Also, don’t sit straight on with your monitor. Turn it a little to one side, and then the next day or week, turn it that angle to the other side. It helps keep your muscles from setting wrong. Change this as often as you need.

Oh, and if you have to do text writing in terminals or presentations, use a darker background and an offwhite, lighter text. It not only will help your eyes as you work, but if you have to make that presentation to others, it’s easier for them to read and focus on.

Oh man, you were running at 60 Hz? I’m so sorry – that’s one of the first things I change on computers, because 60 Hz drives me crazy with headaches. Good to hear you’re making your computer more eye friendly – I’ll be paying attention to see if there’s advice I can borrow from your efforts.
