I miss Billy Crystal…or Steve Martin…or anyone with an ounce of class, as Chris Rock seemed to forget to bring even one. He wasn’t funny. He clearly has no respect for most of the actors there or the awards themselves. He seemed more and more uneasy as the night wore on, probably because he realized he was out of his element. I’m probably in the minority in my reaction. I skipped a chance to see Chris Rock when he was in Raleigh or Greensboro a year or two ago. I know he’s a smart guy who can make sharp, funny observations. It just didn’t work at the Oscars.
Anyway, so I watched the Oscars, and they basically sucked. My main pet peeve in watching awards shows is the cutting off of speeches. To give someone an award that is the pinnacle of the career and then to cut them off just as they’ve recovered from the shock and began to thank some people is just shitty. It was obvious that it was predetermined that Jamie Foxx would get as much time as he wanted, but Hilary Swank, who had won already, had the music playing a minute into her speech.
And those minor awards where the nominees stood lined up on the stage…that was awkward to watch. It looked like a spelling bee. I know they did it to save time, so there wouldn’t be a wait for those artists to make the long trip up to the stage. But it seemed insulting.
As for the awards themselves, I’m so glad Million Dollar Baby won so many awards, mostly because it’s a slap in the face of those right-wing nuts who have tried to trash the film

Damn, due to the NC State/Carolina game, I have to wait until 3:02AM to watch the One Day at a Time reunion. Oh, well, it’s a good game (go State), and it’s not like I’ve got anything better to do. (No, I don’t record anything these days).

Anyone know why I can’t get rid of the blank blue space on here? I don’t have a height attribute anywhere. (If you do happen to go here, feel free to click on the…well, you know).

Roll of paper towels. I left one on the floor. Both cats have taken turns attacking it. Only 59 cents–Scott’s out-of-season Christmas print.

then ignore this link. As far as I could tell, the second head had its own brain. I wonder what the Culture of Life has to say about this.

Moving, draining, exceptional. Not an easy movie to write about, especially without giving away spoilers, so I won’t really try. When I saw that Clint Eastwood had been nominated for Best Actor, my reaction was, “Geez, he’s already nominated for Best Director, and Paul Giamatti got robbed for Sideways“. But Eastwood clearly deserves it. He’s brilliant. Hilary Swank is amazing. Morgan Freeman is great. I’m done… * * * *

There are too many stories of kittens being barbecued and puppies punted like footballs, so I was glad to see a pet story with a happy ending. Killing dog for doing $34.06 worth of damage to another dog sounds like how they treat people in Saudi Arabia. (Speaking of which, when the hell are we doing to bring Free-Dumb and Dumbocracy (my new name for Bush’s Doctrine))?

A decade ago, I wrote for The Chronicle. Why did I stop? Don’t know. I know why I quit WXDU freshman year. Both could’ve wound up being great things, but I quit both. I quit violin lessons when I was nine. I quit track before I even started it in high school. I’ve quit many jobs, including the one I had until last Thursday. I am indeed quite the quitter.
Anyway, my two enthralling articles from a decade ago:
Up all night? Study shows caffeine accentuates stress
Dining services change to meet dietary needs
