Why do I bother reading the news?

These Bush-ass-kissers at Sinclair Broadcasting are pre-empting Nightline tomorrow because Ted Koppel is going to read off the names of the U.S. casualties in Iraq. They think Koppel is trying to make a political point. Koppel is only making a political point in the eyes of those who feel the need to be defensive about what the fuck we’re doing in Iraq in the first place. Sinclair is practicing censorship in an ugly form. Nightline is not going to show nudity or violence, but name those who have died in war! Outrageous. Someone recently suggested that campaigns to inundate someone with emails or faxes was not a good idea. That was a good point, when applied to politicians. But I really believe this Sinclair company needs to be brought to its knees. This is just outrageous.

Clearly the Secret Service is overfunded

Secret Service Questions Student on Drawings

A kid can’t draw the president in effigy without the Secret Service coming. Meanwhile, in good ol’ North Carolina, a gay kid can’t run for student government office and proclaim that he’s “queer” on a poster without the school taking down the poster.

I just want to puke when I hear about men and women dying in Iraq “to protect our freedoms”. And before you go off on me for ignoring all the freedoms we do still have, there are two points behind my nauseau, but the other point is not the point of this rant.

Memories

I finally figured out how the heck the memories module works on LJ. I was retarded regarding the subject until a moment ago. Not that I’ve put much of anything there yet, but at least now I know how to in an organized way.

Scrabble update

Haven’t improved since last post about Scrabble. Record now is 38-63 (15-25 since 4/7), rating is 542 (got as high as 650; was 597 on 4/7, average is 314 (down from 325 on 4/7).

Reading Stefan Fatsis’ Word Freak (about Scrabble tournament players) which I picked up from Nice Price Books earlier in the week. Much more relaxing reading than any political book.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Saw this movie with Jason and Jenn tonight and enjoyed it immensely. Apart from one plot twist that I thought was a cop-out, it was an imaginative, exhilirating ride. I enjoyed Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as the leads. With the possible exception of The Truman Show, I don’t think I’ve enjoyed Jim Carrey in anything more than this movie, probably because I identified a lot with his character Joel. And, wow, it’s #44 on the IMDB Top 250.

[amended 4/25/04 12:18AM, The Roger Ebert review...and I gave it 9/10 on IMDB]

Failing to find the humor

Yo sent out this link to a bunch of us. You can insert anyone’s name in the URL for the same effect:

Having had a few gay friends, and currently in the midst of watching season one of Six Feet Under and watching how painful it is for the character of Dave to grabble with his sexuality, I don’t find this URL joke amusing at all. Am I being overly sensitive here, or am I right to think this is insulting to gays?

Geek alert

Kroger will triple coupons even if the coupon says “no doubling”. They also bungled my checkout, so when I went to customer care after, they gave me credit for more than they should have. [Kroger makes plenty of money off of me; I don't feel guilty]. So I bought $120 worth of groceries for $58 (half of those savings were Kroger card savings). I need to use coupons more often. Of course, now I will think little of spending $20 on dinner tonight.

Microsoft is just too good

I have Word 2003 at work, and I just found the ‘Look Up’ function. Right-click on a word, and you can get, right on your screen, Research results, including complete dictionary definitions, encyclopedia articles, search engine results, and stock quotes. I guess they needed something to differentiate Word 2003 from Word 2002. Spell-check, thesaurus, and grammar check alone just didn’t cut it.
